Changes of Erythrocyte 2, 3-DPG (diphosphoglycerate) Levels According to Storage Conditions





Abstract
2, 3-Diphosphoglycerate (2, 3-DPG) has a central role in controlling the oxygen affi¡þnity of hemoglobin. Decreased level of erythrocyte 2, 3-DPG accounts for increased oxygen affinity of hemoglobin.
Changes of erythrocytic 2, 3-DPG levels according to anticoagulants used and storage time were studied on ten healthy blood donors. The results are summarized as follows:
1. 2, 3-DPG levels in EDTA after 0 hour, 4 hour, 6 hour, 12 hour, 1 day, 2 day, 5 day, 8 day, 14 day, 21 day were 2.04 nmol/ mL, 2. 17 umol/ nL, 2. 12 umol/mL, 2. 07 umol/
mL, 2.08 umol/mL, 2.12 umol/mL, 2.03 umol/mL, 0. 65 umol/mL, 0. 24 nmol/mL, 0. 12
nmol/mL, respectively.
2, 2, 3-DPG levels in heparin after 0 hour, 4 hour, 6 hour, 12 hour, 1 day, 2 day, 5 day, 9 day, 14 day, 21 day were 2. 01 umol/mL, 2. 00 nmol/mL, 2.08 umol/mL, 2.03 umol/mL, 2. 00 umol/mL, 2. 03 umol/mL, 1. 68 umol/mL, 0. 44 umol/mL, 0. 26 umol/
mL, 0. 12 umol/mL, respectively.
3. 2, 3-DPG levels in ACD after 0 hour, 4 hour, 6 hour, 12 hour, 1 day, 2 day, 5 day, 8 day, 14 day, 21 day were 1. 86 umol/mL, 1. 91 umol/mL, 1. 92 umol/mL, 1. 94 nmol/mL, 1. 87 umol/mL, 1.91 umol/mL, 1. 37 umol/mL, 0. 74 umol/mL, 0. 32 umol/ mL, 0. 09 umol/mL, respectively.
The 2,3 DPG levels of erythrocytes remained high only until 5 days and the levels began to decrease abruptly in all of the three anticoagulants.
